Position Summary

Performs minor skilled and unskilled maintenance/repair work at county park facilities and other county property, and perform related work as required. This position is under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Programs and Facilities Manager.  

**The expected hire date for this position is late June/early July**

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform maintenance and preparatory work on county owned grounds and athletics fields to include mowing, dragging, and marking, mulching, and basic landscaping duties
  • Conduct routine inspections of park facilities, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, fences, dog parks, restrooms, and related amenities to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, vandalism, storm damage, or other concerns
  • Perform minor repairs/improvements and maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance of park grounds and facilities, including restrooms, concession areas, pavilions, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, trash receptacles, and pet waste stations. 
  • Assist with trail maintenance, vegetation management, tree line trimming, debris removal, and upkeep of wooded recreational areas
  • Assist with setup, breakdown, preparation, and support activities for County events, tournaments, programs, and community activities
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, blowers, trimmers, hand tools, power tools, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Provide responsive, high-quality service to other County employees and departments, representatives of outside agencies, and members of the public by providing accurate, complete, and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner.  
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or response during inclement weather or emergency situations as needed for park operations or special events
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience: 

  • Training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed for Essential Job Functions. 
  • Previous experience performing structural and grounds maintenance for public parks and recreational areas is highly desirable.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license

Special Qualifications

  • Acceptable driving record if in possession of valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of landscaping and other athletic field maintenance
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques regarding structures, facilities, and fields
  • Must be able to operate and maintain power tools and equipment
  • Must be able to use hand tools for performing semi-skilled maintenance work for park structures and fields

Working Conditions and Disclaimer

This work requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending and twisting of neck, bending and twisting of waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, repetitive use of hands including simple and power grasping and fine manipulation, pushing and pulling, and reaching above shoulder level.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally 70 pounds with assistance.
