Department of Parks and Recreation – Newport News, Virginia
The Newport News Parks and Recreation Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a creative, organized, and community-focused professional to serve as a Marketing Coordinator. This position plays a key role in promoting department programs, events, services, and initiatives through innovative marketing, strategic communications, public relations, branding, and digital engagement efforts.

Essential Job Functions
- Designs and develops marketing campaigns, communication strategies, promotional materials, and digital content to support departmental programs, events, and initiatives.
- Assists with department-wide branding and marketing efforts while supporting executive leadership with communication and promotional strategies.
- Maintains and updates the Department’s website and social media platforms to ensure timely, accurate, and engaging public information.
- Creates graphic design materials including flyers, brochures, advertisements, presentations, banners, and digital content using modern design software and tools.
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and maintains comprehensive public relations and marketing plans.
- Conducts market research and analyzes trends, participation data, and public feedback to support strategic planning and departmental goals.
- Researches, writes, edits, and proofreads content for publications, presentations, media releases, and special projects.
- Assists with the preparation of presentations and communication materials for City leadership, community stakeholders, and public meetings.
- Serves as a media representative for television, radio, and public communication opportunities related to departmental programs and services.
- Develops and distributes communication tools and promotional information to community partners, stakeholders, and the public.
- Responds to requests for information from citizens, media representatives, community organizations, and City departments.
- Assists with supervising assigned staff, interns, volunteers, or support personnel by prioritizing work assignments and coordinating related activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of marketing principles, branding, advertising methods, public relations, and promotional strategies.
- Knowledge of current digital technologies, website management, social media platforms, and print/web production methods.
- Strong understanding of customer service principles and public engagement practices.
- Knowledge of graphic design software and communication tools used in marketing and media production.
