The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanic Technician II will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Individual will maintain and perform basic repairs on a variety of vehicles and machinery utilized by P&R/Park & Landscape Services; perform road services calls and work on equipment from small engine equipment to farm tractor-type equipment; perform minor repairs on vehicles and trailers; perform maintenance and repair on 0-turn mowers, tractor mowers, flail mowers, pickups, trailers, and other grounds equipment; perform tire repairs; maintain necessary records and reports of repairs and servicing; does related work as required.
  • This position has ALPHA I status and the individual will be required to work during emergencies and periods of inclement weather to perform vital services to ensure equipment is operational during snow removal, storm damage cleanup, and other activities related to emergency response.
  • Individual will furnish and wear steel-toed safety boots.
  • Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License, or obtain within six (6) months of hire.

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $2000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment: There is a $4,000 sign-on bonus for newly hired employees with a valid Commercial Driver’s License(CDL) for this position. The bonus will be divided into three bonus increments:

First $1,000.00 bonus will be issued with the first paycheck.

Second $1,000.00 bonus will be issued upon the six (6)month evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations"

Third $2,000.00 bonus will be issued upon the one (1) year evaluation with an overall performance of “Meets Expectations"
The City of Virginia Beach complies with all federal mandates related to positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License(CDL). The city will verify that all employees and prospective employees. 

MINIMUMS: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
