The City's Landscape Specialist performs responsible routine landscaping and horticultural duties in city parks, downtown mall, schools, rights-of-way and public facilities to enhance overall appearance, safety, sanitation, and ecological integrity of urban landscape. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Landscape Supervisor.

The hiring amount for this position is between $20.45 to $24.63 an hour ($42,536.00 - $51,230.40 Annually). Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

• The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. 

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

• High School diploma or GED AND at least 1 year of experience in landscaping, horticulture, and groundskeeping.

OR

• 3 or more years of experience in landscaping, horticulture, and groundskeeping.

OR

• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:

• Obtain VDOT Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Obtain Registered Technician Pesticide License with 12 months of hire.
• Must obtain and maintain a Virginia driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to city criteria.
• Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug screen.

Preferred:

• Supplemental college level or technical/vocational course work in landscaping and/or horticulture.
