Recreation Program Assistant

Description

Assists with the frontline delivery of recreational activities for varying age groups and ability levels. 

Examples of Duties

 

  • Assists with the implementation of recreational activities including, but not limited to, athletics, special events, early childhood, community programs, outdoor recreation, fitness/wellness, open gym, and other program areas
  • Assists with participant supervision; enforces program rules and policies; provides instruction to participants as needed; provides high quality customer service to all patrons of the department
  • Assists with the supervisor of recreation and parks facilities; oversees specific activity areas within the Hopewell Community Center; assists with facility management at outdoor locations like parks, playgrounds, and athletic facilities
  • Assists with organizing and preparing activity supplies; performs set-up and break-down activities with tables, chairs, canopies, sound equipment and other related activity equipment; ensures all equipment is accounted for and returned to appropriate storage location
  • Maintains facility cleanliness and assists with custodial duties as needed

 

Typical Qualifications

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience with special events, working with the general public, managing public facilities, or any appropriate combination of related work experience.

Knowledge:

  • General knowledge of recreation and parks activities, programs, classes, and special events

Skills:

  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Exceptional communication skills

Abilities:  

  • Ability to work varying shifts depending on programmatic needs of the department
  • Ability to work directly with the general public in a variety of program settings
  • Ability to complete physically demanding work assignments 
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

 

Supplemental Information

 

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor climates.  This position will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions such as rain, extreme heat, extreme cold, sun, and wind.  
  • Work extended/irregular hours including nights, weekends, and some holidays

Essential Physical Activities:

  • Stooping, crouching, walking, grasping, hearing, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. 
  • Typical Weight Handled:  up to 50 lbs.
