General Description

Responsible for assisting with the planning, promotion, and delivery of cultural programs, special events, and recreational activities for the Town of Dumfries. This position will support full-time staff in coordinating arts, crafts, music, concerts, festivals, and other cultural events at Town parks and facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below represent the majority of the time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.

Essential Functions

Responsible for recruiting participants, instructors, and volunteers; managing supplies and equipment. Assist in planning, promoting, and leading cultural programs, including arts and crafts, concerts, and special events.

Perform administrative tasks such as creating and distributing marketing materials, maintaining program records, and collecting fees. Requires frequent public contact and collaboration with staff, community partners, and participants to ensure high-quality cultural programming.

Conduct recreational and cultural programs utilizing Town equipment, supplies, and volunteers. Plan, organize, and lead a variety of recreational activities, classes, and special events for different age groups and skill levels.

Assist with event logistics, including setup, monitoring, and breakdown of programs and special events. Retrieve, store, and maintain program supplies and equipment.

Instruct participants on rules and how to safely and enjoyably engage in activities, modifying activities as needed for specific groups.

Maintain records, track participation, manage inventory of supplies, process payments or fees, and complete administrative paperwork.

Class Description

Interact with the public, providing information, resolving complaints, and ensuring a positive and welcoming atmosphere. Support community partnerships and outreach initiatives to expand cultural programming.

Enforce safety rules and policies to prevent injuries and ensure a safe environment for all participants

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School diploma or GED. Two (2) years of related experience in community service, event management, or recreational program administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires intermediate skill level in Canva and Microsoft Office applications {PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook}.

Ability to maintain a flexible schedule to include working evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by event schedules.

Successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Education, Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, or a related field. CPR/AED Certification.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Virginia Driver's License required.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

Work requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and stooping during programs and events. Must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Class Description

May require both indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Requires administrative work including computer use, answering phones, and preparing marketing or program documents.
