General Description
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Dumfries Farmers Market. This position requires on-site presence during all market hours as well as off-site work during non-market hours.
The Manager ensures compliance with Town and state regulations, supports local farmers and vendors, and works to promote a vibrant, sustainable community market. The Manager represents the Market to vendors, customers, and community partners, while reporting to the Recreation and Civic Engagement Manager.
This is a rain-or-shine position requiring both administrative and hands-on duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below represent the majority of time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional functions as necessary.
Essential Functions:
Recruit, select, and manage vendors in compliance with food safety regulations and market rules. Coordinate the collection of vendor fees and maintain accurate participation and financial records.
Design site maps, assign vendor spaces, and oversee market setup and breakdown. Respond promptly to inquiries from vendors, customers, and the community.
Generate promotional content for newsletters, flyers, and social media platforms. Develop partnerships with local organizations to enhance programming. Maintain the Market Information Booth and serve as the public face of the market.
Promote and coordinate special events such as themed markets, cooking demonstrations, and holiday activities. Inspect and maintain market equipment and supplies, recommending replacements when necessary.
Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, interns, and market staff. Prepare reports tracking attendance, sales, vendor participation, and SNAP/EBT transactions. Manage SNAP/EBT and Virginia Fresh Match Program in compliance with grant requirements.
Conduct farm visits and spot inspections to ensure vendor compliance. Assist with other Town recreation and civic engagement events as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent. Three (3) years of experience in program planning, marketing, agriculture, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the market schedule.
Successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening required.
Special Certifications and Licenses
Valid Virginia Driver's License required. CPR/AED Certification is preferred.
Virginia Farmers Market Association (VAFMA) Certified Market Manager and ServSafe Manager certification are preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Work is regularly performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to frequently lift and carry and move objects up to 75 pounds such as chairs, tables, equipment, and supplies.
Requires extended standing, walking, bending, and physical labor in support of market operations. Requires administrative work including use of computers, telephones, and office equipment.
