The purpose of this job within the organization is to safely transport participants, staff, and equipment to and from Town Recreation and Civic Engagement programs, events, and trips. The incumbent is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the department's vehicles and ensuring a positive and professional experience for all riders. This position requires frequent public contact and collaboration with staff and community partners.
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Transport program participants, including adults and children, to and from scheduled activities, trips, and events.
Provide transportation services for programs such as summer camps, senior citizen outings, special events/shuttle service.
Assist passengers, including those with special needs, with boarding and exiting vehicles, including use of wheelchair lifts and restraints. Administer first aid or CPR in emergency situations if needed.
Follow planned routes and schedules, adapting as needed for traffic or weather conditions. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any maintenance issues.
Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the vehicle. Maintain accurate participant counts and complete trip logs, maintenance forms, and other records.
Enforce Town and department policies and rules during transportation.
Act as a representative of the Town by communicating effectively and courteously with participants, parents, and the public.
High School diploma or equivalent. At least one (1) year experience in operating vans or buses and working with diverse populations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Virginia state driver's license with a good driving record.
Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger endorsement may be required based on vehicle type.
CPR/AED Certification preferred.
