The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Recreation Supervisor for our Athletics division.  This position is tasked to plan, implement and evaluate a wide variety of programs at City recreational centers.   The Supervisor manages the overall operation of centers and supervises personnel. This is a forward-facing position that may work on planning committees for city-wide activities and assist in implementing those activities.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates and leads the planning, organizing, promotion, implementation and evaluation of athletic program administration and athletic fee-based classes and programs. 
  • Manages the daily operations of the Athletic office to include staff supervision, scheduling, facility maintenance and security; develops emergency plans. 
  • Supervises, schedules, assigns and evaluates subordinates and volunteers. 
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively supervise subordinates and work in a team environment
  • Coordinates, plans, cultivates, and secures sponsorships for programs and activities; develops partnerships to enhance programs. 
  • Develops revenue and non-revenue producing programs. ·
  • Supervises and coordinates marketing and public relations functions; oversees media contacts and advertising functions. 
  • Performs personnel related functions such as interviewing, making hiring recommendations, scheduling, staff development, performance evaluation and recommending disciplinary action. 
  • Coordinates and develops budget proposals; monitors expenditures; recommends and implements cost saving and operational improvements. · Prepares grant submittals. 
  • Prepares a variety of reports and written correspondence; maintains statistical records. 
  • Promotes events and programs by developing and making public presentations; represents the City in public forums. 
  • Investigates and responds to public inquiries or complaints. 
  • Operates a variety of equipment including recreational/athletic equipment, office equipment, and a computer. 
  • Ability to interpret and enforce all sports by-laws, rules and regulations.

 

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Two years' experience in recreation, fitness, aquatics, athletics or related field.

Valid driver's license required.

CPR/AED and First Aid (preferred) or ability to obtain within 6months of employment.

The preferred candidate will possess a minimum of three years of experience in athletic programming and have supervisory experience.

Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Must have excellent inter-personal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Hours are flexible.40 hours per week. Additional evening and weekend hours as required.
