Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, sports management, therapeutic recreation or a related field; one year of experience in recreation and/or therapeutic recreation work, or event planning; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal, public relations, and management skills necessary to work within deadline constraints. Knowledge of recreation programs and objectives as well as behavior management preferred; strong computer skills; ability to interact with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds; CPR and first aid certification desired. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. 

 

Duties

 

The Recreation Specialist - Senior Center and Therapeutic Recreation Programmer is an integral part of our Active Lifestyles and Therapeutic Recreation community providing fun and educational programs to a large, close-knit group focusing on those 50 and older and individuals with disabilities. The Recreation Specialist will operate under direct supervision of the Principal Recreation Specialist and will develop and implement programs for the Chesterfield Baptist Church Senior Center and our Therapeutic Recreation section. May support other centers as needed. 

Job responsibilities include the following: 

Daily senior center and therapeutic recreation administrative duties. 

Program and special events coordination. Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate programs. Program registration and maintenance. 

Order supplies and materials needed for programs and/or the senior center. Input program information into registration software. 

Assist instructors with scheduling their programs. Special events decoration designs. 

Assist with finding sponsorships and donations. 

Invoice processing.  

Program marketing which includes flyer design and distribution. Instructor/vendor contracts and payments. 

Effectively utilize automated systems and other software to assure efficient office management. Program coordination, supervision and evaluation. 

Responsible for booking entertainment and processing payments. Locate and supervise new instructors and volunteers. 

Setting up rooms for daily activities. Enforce facility rules and regulations.  

Facilitation of existing programs. 

Work with the public and provide direction to seasonal employees, students and/or volunteers. 

Follow-up with inclusion requests and provide inclusion services as needed. 

Perform other work as required. 

 

Shift

Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekends
