GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:                                                                            FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Performs intermediate semiskilled work in the repair, maintenance and care of parks and related structures and equipment; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Parks Supervisor.  Limited supervision may be exercised over seasonal labor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Maintaining and repairing parks, ball fields and playground facilities; performing park mowing and grounds maintenance work; assisting with other projects as assigned.

  • Sets up ball fields including application of clay, edging, lining and grass cutting.
  • Ensures ball fields conform to specifications and are edged and kept in excellent playing condition.
  • Mows grass in all parks and public properties; edges, trims and cleans public areas.
  • Performs light plumbing and electrical repairs in County buildings.
  • Performs custodial work in park restrooms.
  • Paints interior and exterior of County buildings.
  • Empties trash cans; places trash receptacles throughout recreation areas.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work; general knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trades; some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to operate mowers, tractors and related machinery and equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in grounds maintenance work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
