The Recreation Athletics Supervisor is responsible for planning, organizing, executing, and directing the development and implementation of community recreation athletic programs designed to meet the needs of the community, through a variety of classes, leagues, tournaments, and clinics. The Athletics Supervisor trains, evaluates, and supervises employees and volunteers in the Athletics division. Other duties include overseeing field preparation, purchasing equipment, hiring sports officials, securing volunteer coaches, formulating rules and policies, scheduling employees and monitoring their timesheets, managing payments, and growing the Athletics program.

  • Supervises the Athletics Division of the Recreation Department through hiring, training, and providing work direction and problem solving assistance of division employees
  • Secures and schedules volunteers
  • Oversees daily operation of athletic programs
  • Analyzes, interprets, and effectively communicates policies and procedures
  • Oversees field preparation
  • Manages field rentals and payments
  • Purchases and manages payments for recreation equipment/supplies
  • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with area organizations
  • Communicates and coordinates with the Public Works department 
  • Enhances and grows the Athletic division sports program
  • Examples of programs to be developed, planned, and organized include youth activities, clinics, and tournaments in baseball, softball, basketball, wrestling, and other sports; adult sports' leagues and tournaments

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Must demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the following areas:

    • Methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning, development and administration of athletic programs 
    • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation
    • Skill based programming, principles and practices of budget development 
    • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
    • Various sports equipment used in recreation programs and field preparation   
    • Youth and adult sport related programming
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be highly detail oriented, organized and proactive and possess the ability to prioritize projects effectively while handing multiple projects at the same time.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

  • High School Diploma or GED certification
  • Education/Training: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration or a related field.
  • Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible recreational program administration experience. License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid basic first aid, CPR and AED Certifications.

Valid driver's license  with a satisfactory driving record

Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and at indoor and outdoor recreational facilities
  • Travel to different locations
  • Incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions
  • Work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces
  • Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. 
Physical:
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and recreation facility setting
  • To stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • To occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight
  • To operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard
  • To travel to other recreation sites
  • To verbally communicate to exchange information
