The Recreation Specialist II duties will include but not limited to:

  • Provide direct day-to-day leadership and supervision for full-time staff, part-time staff, volunteers, and interns working the Parks After Dark program to include: hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, evaluating, and discipline
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate outcome-based programs that demonstrate a comprehensive and current understanding of issues and quality of life concerns in Virginia Beach communities; work collaboratively with community leaders to map and align strategies and assets to strengthen neighborhoods
  • Assist with budget preparation; prepare required reports and documents ensuring completion with accuracy and timeliness
  • Work with vendors, negotiate contracts and coordinate service agreements for logistical and program needs, ensuring compliance with established procedures. Oversee service to ensure contract terms are met
  • Assist supervisor with strategic long-term planning and visioning to develop, refresh, and implement community enhancing outdoor special events that meet the needs of our citizens.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms; lead and instruct staff how to provide excellent customer service; respond to inquiries/complaints via phone, email or in-person in a timely, professional manner and effectively resolve issues; promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment
  •        Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.       

MINIMUMS:
Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience as a recreation supervisor; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such positions as recreation supervisor.

This position is being advertised as a pool, and applications could be used to fill current vacancies and any other similar Recreation Specialist II positions that become available within six months from the closing date of this posting.

The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

General work schedule: 40 hrs./week - Must be available to work varied hours: evenings, nights, weekends & holidays.

Hours may vary by season.
June – August: varied shifts between Monday-Saturday (11:00am -11:00 p.m.)
September – May: Monday – Friday (8:00am-7:00pm)

Must be able to work extended shifts greater than 8 hours as needed and able to work varied hours evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions. Must be able to lift 50 pounds with assistance. Must be able to work in outdoor elements to include heat, rain, and snow. Must be able to stand/walk for prolonged periods of time.

As a condition of employment, all part-time employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.

This is an Alpha I position, which may require reporting to work during periods of emergency or inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.
