Are you passionate about astronomy, science education, and creating memorable experiences for the community? We’re looking for a motivated and outgoing Recreation Specialist II to lead Planetarium operations and astronomy programming within our Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to inspire curiosity, foster STEAM learning, and engage with a diverse public through hands-on science experiences and stellar programming.

What You’ll Do:

As the Recreation Specialist II for Planetarium Operations, you will play a vital role in the management and delivery of astronomy-related programs and services. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Planetarium Operations: Oversee the daily operations of the Planetarium facility, including scheduling shows, managing reservations, programming, and supervising staff. Ensure a safe, efficient, and educational environment for visitors and team members alike.
  • Program Development & Delivery: Plan, coordinate, and lead engaging astronomy and science-based programs for children, families, schools, and the general public. This includes public planetarium shows, hands-on workshops, seasonal events, and citywide outreach initiatives.
  • Customer Service: Serve as a friendly and knowledgeable point of contact for visitors. Provide exceptional service both in-person and virtually, answering questions about programs, facility use, and upcoming events.
  • Staff Supervision: Lead a team of part-time staff and volunteers. This includes hiring, training, scheduling, supervising daily tasks, and evaluating performance. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Community Collaboration: Build and maintain partnerships with local schools, science organizations, and other City departments to expand access to STEAM education and develop community-focused programs.
  • Marketing & Outreach: Assist with the creation of promotional and educational materials across a variety of platforms—print, digital, social media, and video—to boost community awareness and participation.
  • Facility & Event Management: Open and close the facility as scheduled, oversee internal and external rentals, coordinate logistics for special events, and ensure adherence to City policies and safety procedures.
  • Data Tracking & Evaluation: Monitor attendance, collect participant feedback, and compile program performance reports to help inform future programming and community needs.
  • Support Outdoor & Seasonal Programming: Assist with setup and operation of astronomy equipment (e.g., telescopes, projectors), and support other nature-based and educational events during peak periods, including evening and weekend programs.
