Description

Under general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent, this position performs intermediate administrative work planning, organizing, and supervising all aspects of the athletics program. A primary responsibility includes leading the planning, coordination, and execution of an innovative, diverse, and inclusive slate of year-round athletic programs.

The position includes considerable planning, scheduling, and organizing of activities, frequent contact with participants, coaches, and officiating personnel, and exercising considerable oversight of programs, events, and staff. Employee regularly develops, evaluates, and modifies new and existing athletic programs to ensure programs maintain a high level of quality while continuing to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community.   

Supervision is exercised over 1 full-time Athletics Coordinator and many part-time, seasonal and volunteer staff.

Detailed Work Activities

  • Plans, organizes, and implements athletic based programs, leagues, and events. 
  • Prepares practice and game schedules for teams, coaches, and part-time staff. 
  • Monitors, reviews, and conducts evaluations of athletic programs. Makes recommendations and oversees modifications of athletic programs.
  • Exercises supervision of 1 full-time Athletics Coordinator and multiple part-time and seasonal staff. Includes conducting interviews and recommending hires, providing training and mentoring of staff, and conducting performance reviews as needed. 
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteer coaches. Ensures compliance with volunteer background checks and training. 
  • Oversees implementation of athletic sponsorship program to include soliciting team, league, and banner sponsorships and making recommendations for modification to the program as needed. 
  • Oversees and implements athletic field rental program to include equitably allocating field spaces while also ensuring field spaces can be maintained without sustaining significant damage from overuse. 
  • Monitors regional and national athletic trends and makes recommendations for implementation to ensure a diverse and inclusive athletic program for the community. 
  • Participates in preparation and recommendation of annual athletics budget line items. Monitors operating expenses throughout the year and ensures all purchases made are following approved purchasing procedures. 
  • Communicates with Parks Division staff to ensure field needs for games and practices are properly communicated and understood. Assists with various field maintenance duties relative to the preparation for athletic programs and events as needed.
  • Conducts pre-season meetings with coaches, participants, parents, and staff to ensure adequate understanding of league(s) as well as ensuring equitable division of skill level among teams.
  • Keeps inventory of needed supplies and equipment for athletics and purchases new equipment and supplies when necessary. 
  • Builds and maintains effective working relationships with local volunteer and municipal based recreation organizations.
  • Assists with other departmental programs and activities as needed and performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of principles, practices and methods of parks and recreation programs.
  • General knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of parks and recreation programming.
  • Ability to plan, execute, over-see, and deliver a variety of year-round parks and recreation programs and activities. 
  • Ability to deal tactfully with staff, contractors and the public. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, citizens, employees, contractors, supervisors, participants and other agencies. 
  • Adept in use of computer and web-based programs such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), online registration programs, and social media 
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, lifting, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze written or computer data, depth and color perception, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Must possess the auditory ability to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by the means of the spoken word.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

Desirable Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in parks and recreation management, sport management, or related field.
  • 5 years of experience of an increasingly responsible nature in municipal recreation and/or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid and/or the ability to obtain within 3 months of employment. 
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and/or Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) preferred.
