The Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services Department is seeking a strategic and dynamic leader to serve as its next Deputy Director. In this key leadership position, you’ll help shape the future of parks, recreation, and leisure programming across the city—leading innovative projects, supporting vibrant community initiatives, and guiding an incredible team of professionals.

From capital improvements and facility operations to inclusive programming and community engagement, this role offers the opportunity to help build a healthier, more connected Hampton.

Examples of Work:
  • Assisting the Director with overall department leadership, management, and administration

  • Coordinating daily operations including recreation programming, park operations, facility maintenance, budgeting, and community engagement

  • Supporting the development and oversight of departmental policies, procedures, and capital improvement efforts

  • Leading and advising on personnel matters including hiring, training, and performance management

  • Contributing to grant acquisition, fiscal planning, and master plan implementation

  • Representing the department in meetings, community events, and emergency response efforts

  • Stepping in for the Director as needed and maintaining a high level of responsiveness and accountability

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Business, or related field

  • Minimum of five (5) years of senior-level experience managing community programs and public parks/recreation activities

  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional or Executive (CPRP/CPRE) preferred

  • Municipal government experience preferred

  • Strong knowledge of budgeting, grant acquisition, master planning, and public administration

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record

  • Must pass a background check prior to employment

  • May be designated as “essential personnel” during city emergencies
