Minimum Requirements

  • Associates degree or two (2) years of college level  or post secondary education in Recreation, Physical Education or related field. 
  • Requires two (2) years of full time equivalent experience in recreation work at a professional or paraprofessional level in one or more of the primary functional areas of recreation.  
  • When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation: must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a therapeutic recreation environment, to include experience in settings such as:  adapted physical education, special education, and residential/institutional settings inclusive of individuals with disabilities.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
  • Must possess or obtain basic CPR/First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
  • When assigned to Therapeutic Recreation a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification is  preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion. 

Additional Requirements

  • Requires shift work to include some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • May require some local travel.
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules
