The Activity Center Leader duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Serves as the “On-Site Job Coach” for new part time staff members.  Training them in the daily duties of their position at inclusion sites.”
  • Maintains participant, program and unit files. (organizing, updating and purging)
  • Assists with the training part time staff on the principles and practices of Universal Programming, Therapeutic Recreation, community integration, activity adaptations, disabilities, leisure education, behavior management and program planning.
  • Works directly in recreational programs providing verbal direction to staff, participants and volunteers; physical assistance to participants (i.e.- lifting and transferring from/to wheelchairs, securing wheelchairs in vans/buses for transportation; hand over hand assistance with activities of daily living, etc.)
  • Serves as a role model for other staff and volunteers while welcoming people of diverse ages, orientations, abilities, races and cultures in a recreational environment. 
  • Work environments include office space shared with 3- 5 co-workers, classrooms, pool/pool deck, outdoors, gymnasium, beach, nature trails, lakes/waterways, etc.
  • Utilizes a graded and gradual hierarchy of interventions when interacting with participants who become aggressive, following Mandt Training guidelines (i.e.- philosophy and attitude; verbal communication; walking with/accompanying; supporting; avoiding; redirecting; releasing; and restraint, if needed for the safety of all involved.)
  • Provides quality customer service, which includes immediate co-workers, other city employees, participants, parents and the general public.
  • Works collaboratively with the department, committees, teams and other agencies.
  • Prepares required reports, documents, paperwork and promotional materials.
  • Maintains a safe environment.

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

 

MINIMUMS: High school diploma or GED, at least 18 years old plus six(6) months of related experience as a program leader working with individuals with disabilities; such as: personal assistant/attendant, youth leader, mentor, camp counselor, teacher/substitute, coach, recreation program leader, church youth leader, scout leader, or child care provider, either in a paid or volunteer capacity or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. At programs providing direct child care, convictions of any barrier crime set forth in Virginia Code 63.2- 1719 shall be an automatic disqualification for employment in this position. Requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: At child care program locations licensed by the Virginia State Department of Social Services additional qualifications are determined by the current state standards and guidelines. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

 

The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, program needs and weather.

Scheduled hours between 30 and 35 hours per week.

Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

Selected candidate potentially eligible for the City’s health benefit plan. Final determination will be made upon employment.

As a condition of employment, all part-time employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.
