Role Overview

Performs minor skilled and unskilled grounds and general maintenance work at county parks, facilities and other county property.  This position will report to the Parks and Recreation Programs and Facilities Manager.  

Role Description

  • Performs maintenance and preparatory work on county owned grounds to include mowing,  mulching, and basic landscaping duties.
  • Performs minor repairs/improvements and maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of grounds to include grass, shrubs, and trees, and facility structures to include rest rooms, parking lots, concession stand, and pavilion.
  • Operates and performs minor maintenance on tractors, mowers, or other light landscaping equipment.
  • Operates and performs minor repairs on hand-held power and gardening tools.  
  • Provides responsive, high quality service to other County employees and departments, representatives of outside agencies, and members of the public by providing accurate, complete, and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient, and timely manner.  
  • Performs maintenance and preparatory work on athletic fields to include mowing, dragging, and marking.
  • Performs maintenance on playing surfaces to include, but not limited to, dragging baseball/softball fields, resetting bases, repairing pitching mounds and batter boxes, replacing soccer nets, repairing worn surfaces, etc. 
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of methods and techniques of landscaping; Knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques regarding structures and facilities; Must be able to operate and maintain power tools and equipment; Must be able to use hand tools for performing semi-skilled maintenance work.

Education and Experience

Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.  Previous experience performing structural and grounds maintenance is highly desirable. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending and twisting of neck, bending and twisting of waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, repetitive use of hands including simple and power grasping and fine manipulation, pushing and pulling, and reaching above shoulder level.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally 70 pounds with assistance.

Special Requirements

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
