Reston Community Center (RCC) seeks a highly motivated professional in the aquatics industry to provide full-time support for operations of the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center at RCC Hunters Woods. The successful candidate, under the general supervision of the Aquatics Operations Director, oversee aquatics facility and lifeguard operations of the Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center. 

The position has responsibilities related to safety and emergency services, equipment operations, hiring, training, scheduling, and other personnel functions. In addition, the position may support the programs and services of the Aquatics section including support to administrative and cashiering functions. The TLS Aquatics Center was fully renovated in 2019 and has state-of-the-art equipment systems and pools. Salary: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($22.3000 to $29.7333) of the advertised compensation range, and the offer will not exceed the midpoint of the pay grade. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

 

 

Illustrative Duties

General Duties 
Assists in the administration of the facility operations such as conducting inventory, preparing administrative and financial reports, and assisting in the preparation of the annual operating budget;
Assists in the ordering and receiving of supplies;
Assists with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of staff and volunteers;
Adheres to revenue and expense limits;
Ensures staff compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards;
Informs the public of pertinent rules and regulations;
Directs residents to private and public resources and programs;
Assists in the development and implementation of community outreach plans to target
underserved populations and to increase overall program participation;
Delivers customer service by distributing literature and providing information;
Assists as a liaison between County agencies and residents.

Operations 
Assists with providing operational support by supervising the maintenance of assigned facilities.


Programming
Assists with providing Parks/Recreation programming support by
developing and coordinating several specialized programs and special events;
Maintains records necessary to the operation and evaluation of programs.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center and/or park management;
Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures;
Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment;
Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
Ability to prepare a variety of administrative reports;
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, and the public;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:
Graduation from high school or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education, plus two years of related experience in a recreation center, recreational park, or golf course operation or two years experience organizing and coordinating public recreation activities or community affairs, as applicable to the position.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Pool Operator's License (Required within 3 months) 
  • CPR/First Aid (Required within 3 months) 
  • Lifeguard Training (VA) (Required within 3 months) 
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor (VA) (Required within 6 months) 
  • AED - Required within 12 months and recertify every 24 months (Required within 12 months) 
  • Certifications curriculum desired is American Red Cross.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).
  • The appointee to the position will be required to complete the following to the satisfaction of the employer:
    • Criminal Background Investigation
    • Child Protective Services Registry Check


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated work experience in a recreation center, pool, park, and/or athletic field.
  • Strong knowledge and work experience in the aquatics field. 
  • Demonstrated success and experience in an aquatic supervision role, including scheduling of lifeguards and class/program development.
  • Knowledge with pool chemistry and operation safety.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee may be required to do walking, standing, bending and carrying items of up to 20 pounds. in weight. Work is generally active. Work requires employee to respond and direct others in an emergency. Work requires employee to stand for long periods of time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include a practical exercise.
