Your Role . . .
The COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & EVENTS SPECIALIST (RECREATION SPECIALIST I) duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide direct day-to-day leadership and supervision for part-time staff, volunteers, and interns working the Parks After Dark program to include: scheduling, set-up, programs and activities, customer inquiries, and site clean-up
  • Oversee scheduling of entertainment, vendors, partnering stakeholders, and planned activities at recurring special events, including Parks After Dark
  • Lead Part Time Staff in planning and implementing programs and activities that demonstrate a comprehensive and current understanding of issues, contributors to positive youth outcomes and quality of life concerns in Virginia Beach communities
  • Maintain collaborative relationship with community stakeholders; attend community meetings and maintain a resource database
  • Oversee youth development initiatives focused on long-term preventative recreational programing including mentorship, intervention and civic engagement for youth
  • Operate vehicles to provide transportation for participants to special events or programs
  • Assist with the purchase and maintenance of program supplies and inventory
  • Assist with the investigation of accidents and incidents; follow protocol for reporting and documenting
  • Develop reports to collect data on program trends and participant outcomes; prepare and submit these and other reports, as required
  • Assist with tracking and monitoring program expenditures, including staff and participant salaries

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

    Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.

    Please see job link in the posting description.This position is being advertised as a pool, and applications could be used to fill current vacancies and any other similar Recreation Specialist I positions that become available within six months from the closing date of this posting.

    The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but will be scheduled between other park sites/facilities/locations.

    All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or may be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

    General work schedule: 40 hrs./week - Must be available to work varied hours: evenings, nights, weekends & holidays.

    Hours may vary by season.
    June – August: varied shifts between Monday-Saturday (11:00am -11:00 p.m.)
    September – May: Monday – Friday (8:00am-7:00pm)

    Candidate will be required to work varied nights and weekends in the outdoors in varied temperatures during programs.

    This is an Alpha I position, which may require reporting to work during periods of emergency or inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.

    Requires a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.

    As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.
