Recreation Specialist II- Recreation Services duties and responsibilities could include but not be limited to:
Customer Service
- Provide legendary experiences to internal and external customers in both written and oral forms
- Ability to lead and instruct staff on how to provide legendary experiences while promoting Parks and Recreation programs and services.
- Must possess the ability to promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment among several work units.
- Provide facility tours and upsell programs and amenities.
Facility Management
- Oversee, assess and ensure efficient and safe daily operations of the facility.
- Facilitate training and coordination of emergency operating procedures in conjunction with other units
- Coordinate use of facility space
- Collaborate to set goals and objectives.
- Work with Creative HQ to understand demographic information, citizen priorities and trends. Ensure that all programmatic information for the recreation center is appropriately entered into registration software.
- Build strong internal and external communications
- Effectively resolve issues including conflicts amongst customers
- Effectively negotiate and oversee contracts and service agreements.
- Enforce city policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Respond to and/or oversee the investigation of accidents and incidents and ensure corrective action is initiated.
- Develop, recommend, draft, and enforce unit policies and procedures. Coordinate with other City agencies and groups within the department.
- Ensure equipment inventory and maintenance is completed in a timely, accurate and purposeful manner.
- Investigate and appropriately report maintenance related concerns. Serve as facility contact during repairs.
Supervision & Leadership
- Be empowered and take initiative; foster an environment that encourages everyone to feel confident in their ability to make decisions
- Provide leadership and supervision for Recreation Center Services Unit for part time and full-time employees and volunteers. Tasks to include hiring, training, professional development, mentoring, evaluating, and disciplining.
- Set goals and parameters for team to conduct diverse programs and activities utilizing departmental amenities.
- Assist team with problem-solving to facilitate effective program and facility operations
- Skill in handling personnel matters and administrative duties.
- Facilitate unit and facility work schedules that are appropriate to the center's programming and participation needs and remains within budget.
- Skill in handling difficult interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public.
Budget and Statistics
- Effectively utilize and track resources; project, track and meet revenue and expenditure targets.
- Prepare required reports and documents
- Prepare statistical data for budgetary purposes and ensure accuracy.
- Track part time hours to ensure staff are not working over the allotted number of budgeted hours.
- Experience using software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, ActiveNet, Oracle and databases for financials/programs.
Programming
- Plan, coordinate, supervise and evaluate department recreation programs for preschoolers, youth, teens, adults and seniors to include but not be limited to: Forever Young Programs, Drop in Childcare, birthday parties, special events, classes, sports and specialty camps, weight room, gymnasium, sports, and youth game room operations.
- Provide leadership, coordination, direction and oversight for teams responsible for organizing and implementing large events within each of the 7 recreation centers.
Community Outreach
- Develop and maintain community outreach, partnerships and collaboration with local businesses, organizations, city agencies, schools, etc.

MINIMUMS:
Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience as a recreation supervisor; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to six (6) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such positions as recreation supervisor.

The work schedule associated with the position you are applying for varies to facilitate center operations and programming for youth and adults. The typical schedule will include morning shifts of 4:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., mid-shifts of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and evening shifts 12:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., and working weekend shifts of Saturday 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and Sunday 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
This position requires a First Responder Certification; or must obtain within for (4) months of hire date and maintain the certification.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled to work at other facilities locations. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather.
The position you are applying for is designated as Alpha I, requiring the selected candidate to work, regardless of the City’s operational status. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
This position pool could be used to fill current vacancies for other similar Recreation Specialist II position that become available within six months from the closing date of this posting.
Driver's license is preferred. Candidate will be required to travel to varied locations base on program parameters.
