JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

This position is located in the Bluefield Fitness & Recreation Center, which maintains and provides parks, recreation facilities and programs for the public.  This position performs a variety of administrative work in planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive recreation program with emphasis on supervising the facility, athletics, fitness center and front desk operations, and computer software system.  Works under the general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of budget
  • Supervises and assists staff in planning and implementing indoor and outdoor recreation programs and special events
  • Assists in overseeing the operation of the City FitRec Center
  • Provides support to Mitchell Stadium and Lotito City Park as needed by coordination of scheduled use and maintenance
  • Assists in the overseeing and scheduling of staff, has ability to lead staff with integrity and strong management skills, determines work procedures, oversees work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.  Oversees marketing for the department
  • Assists staff in the creation of the marketing and promotion of recreation services
  • Deliver direct customer service with members, guests and event attendees
  • Oversee and enforce institution policies, procedures, controls and fee structures
  • Assist to ensure and maintain a safe environment for all users and visitors
  • Provide accurate and timely communications with recreation groups
  • Assists to ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed
  • Serves as a member of various committees as assigned
  • Performs some or all duties of the Director in their absence
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned as needed

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism or related field.  College class work in recreation, physical education, related field including course work in organization and administration
  • Five years of responsible experience in the Parks and Recreation field or the equivalent with management experience across diverse recreational areas, and a proven record of program growth, generating revenue and maintaining high service standards preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Requirements

  • The successful candidate will undergo a background check and drug screen

  • Strong proficiency in, and knowledge of athletics, athletic facilities and services, and playing fields, courts and related maintenance
  • Commitment to execute established strategies and action plans as provided by Director and agency
  • Strong interpersonal and employee relations skills
  • Effective communication, public speaking, and presentation skills

  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel and recreation related software programs

Work Environment

Most work will be performed at the Fitness and Recreation Center. The Deputy Director will work with a range of age groups including children and seniors.  Special events, youth summer programs and football games at Mitchell Stadium are common activities. Some work is performed in an office setting, but often circulation throughout the facility, other city areas, or going outside to assist in programs will be necessary.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Licenses

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) as granted by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certificates
  • Lifeguard Certification is a plus
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License and an acceptable driving record

Salary commensurate with experience.
