The Town of Herndon, Virginia Parks and Recreation Department (HPRD) is seeking a highly motivated professional to join our team to plan, direct, and develop recreation programs, specifically in community special events, classes, camps, and youth programs.
This position will play an integral role in the development and delivery of programs and activities in community and family special events, recreational and out-of-school programs. The department is seeking someone with a vision of excellence and a desire to be self-motivated to improve existing programs and develop diverse new activities. Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Implements and coordinates all aspects of various town instructional and recreational programs, camps, sports, and events in assigned division; researches and creates new and updated programs on and off-site in accordance with regional trends and community interests. Interacts with patrons. Develops sports league rules, schedules appropriate facilities, and coordinates other activities as assigned.
2. Leads and coordinates community outreach activities, networking, collaboration and programming, delivering activities to economically disadvantaged and/or underserved populations.
3. For assigned programs, prepares financial analysis, reports and budget; recommends purchases; recommends capital investments for division. Negotiates vendor contracts. Assists with department’s agency accreditation.
4. Requires the capacity to act as a first line supervisor, including overseeing work, acting on employee problems, and assigning the work of others. Hires and trains new and current regular or part-time flexible/temporary employees as assigned. Coordinates payroll for assigned staff.
5. Ensures or conducts computer data entry and generates reports as required; performs administrative work as required.
6. Develops marketing strategies including social media and printed materials (in languages as appropriate) for assigned programs.
7. May lead or support the detailed management, coordination and execution of town events, such as mayor’s volunteer appreciation night, July 4th celebration, holiday events, foot races, arts and crafts show and kids’ triathlon.
8. Requires the ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups internal and external to the organization.
9. Requires possession of a strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times.
10. Interacts with customers, students, parents and instructors to provide exceptional service, receiving complaints, suggestions, and questions; provides information and assistance as requested.
11. Meets and collaborates with community groups, volunteers and the general public in the implementation of assigned programs and events. Works with local organizations, businesses, corporations and schools.
12. Attends meetings and professional development workshops, webinars or conferences; actively participates in departmental and divisional staff meetings and training classes. Serves as department representative to assigned committees.
13. Performs other duties as required.
• Bachelor’s degree in recreation or closely related field
• Minimum three years’ experience or training, managing public parks and recreation programs
• Experience recruiting and supervising seasonal staff, and leading and directing youth summer camps highly desirable
• Experience with RecTrac software and Virginia childcare licensing standards desirable
• Bilingual in English and Spanish desirable
• CPR and first aid certification desired, or obtained within three months of employment with the town
• Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and occasional use of Power Point
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:30pm; Periodic evening and weekend hours for meetings, programs, and events
