Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in recreation, or related/equivalent field with a minimum of three years of related experience including one year serving in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of public recreation; principles and practices of recreation program planning for all ages and experience working with diverse populations; knowledge of large scale afterschool and summer camp program administration; strong customer service skills; ability to work independently and/or collaboratively with others; critical thinking skills with the ability to problem solve and make sound decisions; ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; project management skills: Ability to design, develop and implement programs; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds; and ability to supervise staff and volunteers. Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment. Possess the ability to direct the work of multiple staff and to coordinate the activities of large numbers of participants. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sponsorships and partnerships with various organizations and county businesses that support community recreation programs. Flexibility to work varied schedule is required (some evenings, weekends and holidays).

Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and dated within thirty days of interview date.

Duties

Join a top-notch team at Chesterfield County Parks & Recreation! The incumbent in this position is the departments lead for youth community recreation programs. Plan, develop, organize, and implement recreation programs for youth, with an emphasis on the school aged population, to include classes, workshops, programs, and countywide special events. Plan, lead, and implement multiple summer camps across the county. Manage and facilitate the departments mobile playground (RecNRoll) and create and implement multiple youth and community outreach programs. Serve in leadership roles in various committees throughout the county. Supervise and train fulltime and part-time staff and volunteers. Collaborate with Public Affairs to effectively promote programs to include news releases, flyers, and postings on social media. Maintain strong customer relationships with county departments, community groups, businesses, churches and other event organizers. Coordinate with other Parks and Recreation divisions, county departments, municipalities, outside agencies and partners as appropriate. Budget development and management. Public speaking to promote community recreation programming. Perform other work as required.

Shift

Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; includes some evenings, weekends and holidays.
