General Description: This is an administrative position. The incumbent performs complex tasks and fieldwork to develop, market, implement, and evaluate recreational programs in one or more of the following disciplines of community recreation: special events, therapeutic recreation, youth programs, adult programs, and senior adult programs.
  
 Organization: The Recreation Coordinator reports to a Recreation Manager and may supervise several staff.
  
 Essential Functions:

  • Researches, plans, develops, coordinates, supervises and evaluates department programs, including staff led summer programs, and those related to specific discipline.
  • Supervises contractors and volunteers, maintaining appropriate records.
  • Develop and maintain program budgets, under the direction of the Recreation Manager.
  • Recruit, select, train and evaluate employees, performing related human resources functions and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Develop, produce and distribute promotional materials.
  • Serves on various committees and boards as liaison between the department, community and the county.
  • Assists with Department public relations and community involvement, through attendance at community events.
  • Recreation Coordinator may be responsible for one or more of the following tasks:
    • Coordinate regular maintenance for Recreation Centers, under the direction of the Recreation Manager.
    • Coordinate, manage and track department volunteers for department.
    • Coordinates accommodations for participants with special needs in community recreational programs.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge and experience in staff supervision and evaluation required. Must be able to plan, implement and evaluate programs and events in related discipline. Ability to organize and prioritize work, work independently, program solve, develop and maintain working relationship with staff and the public, required. Effective written and oral communication skills, required. Computer literacy, required.
  
 Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required (Bachelor’s degree preferred) with at least two (2) years’ related experience, including supervisory experience – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.
  
 Special Conditions:

  • Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License
  • Work beyond normal work schedule, including weekends and evenings
  • Twelve-month probationary period
