Shift Supervisor

The shift supervisor helps to oversee the day-to-day visitor service operations of the park including operation of the visitor center, contact station and parking areas, including supervising the rangers who work in these areas.  Daily duties include cash management supervision, batch reconciliation, helping to monitor parking and performing park opening and closing procedures when scheduled.  Also includes assisting in the office providing support services to staff, helping with gift shop merchandising and other tasks as assigned.     

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day visitor service operations of the park, including the visitor center, contact station, and parking areas.
  • Supervise rangers in designated areas, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Manage cash, conduct batch reconciliation, and monitor parking activities.
  • Perform park opening and closing procedures as scheduled.
  • Assist in the office, providing support services, and aiding in gift shop merchandising.
  • Operate computer, cash register, laminator, handheld radio, and multi-line phone system.
  • Communicate accurate reservation procedures, park fees, and amenities information.
  • Provide clear details on park interpretive programs and local attractions to visitors.
  • Perform clerical duties like answering phones, copying, and typing correspondence.
  • Occasionally undertake cleaning tasks, including bathrooms and common areas.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Reconcile tills and report discrepancies in detail.
  • Conduct opening and closing routines of the park.
  • Perform general housekeeping of park facilities and maintain a clean workspace.
  • Assist with special events, interpretive programs, and other assigned duties.
  • Work on weekends and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficient in computer and point of sales systems.
  • General knowledge of park operations and ability to interact well with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to handle daily cash register transactions, reconcile batches, and complete cash management paperwork.
  • Previous experience in customer service or public relations.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge and skills in computer-based business applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License with a clean driving record.

Additional Considerations:

  • Previous experience in a park system or related field.
  • Proficient in giving and receiving directions.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and standing for long periods.

Special Requirements:

A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.
